Nepal, Iceland Foreign Ministers Discuss Climate Change and Disaster Recovery

Kathmandu, Sept 24: Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal held a bilateral meeting with Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, the two foreign ministers exchanged views on the growing economic and humanitarian costs of climate change-induced disasters, including the devastating Bhotekoshi flood in Nepal.

They stressed the need for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to ensure timely recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction following disasters.

The ministers also emphasised the importance of strengthening global solidarity and international cooperation to address the escalating impacts of climate change, particularly amid gaps in capacity and constraints on resources.

They underscored the need for coordinated efforts to strengthen countries’ resilience and improve their ability to respond to climate-related disasters.
