Gharapjhong Climate Conference begins in Mustang focusing on climate change impacts across Nepal

Mustang: The Gharapjhong Climate Conference 2026 has kicked off in Jomsom of Mustang.

The two-day conference, organised by Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, was inaugurated by Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Gita Chaudhary.

Before the inauguration, people’s representatives from all seven provinces and local levels gathered at the rural municipality office in Jomsom. They then reached the conference venue in a cultural procession.

According to Rural Municipality Chair Mohan Singh Lalchan, the inaugural session lasted around three hours.

A message of best wishes from Prime Minister Balendra Shah was also read out during the inaugural session.

Local people’s representatives from Mustang are addressing the conference on the impacts of climate change in different parts of Nepal.

The conference is discussing the impacts of climate change in the mountain, hill and Tarai regions. It is also focusing on the causes of carbon emissions and measures to reduce their impacts.

The conference will conclude with the issuance of the Climate Declaration 2026, focusing on climate action and climate justice.

Discussions are being held on climate adaptation measures and future plans that local governments can adopt to address the growing climate crisis.

The conference is also focusing on the risks posed by rising global temperatures and their impacts on agriculture, livestock, tourism, education, health, infrastructure, the environment, human lives and property.

The two-day event is also reviewing the loss of lives and property caused by the Bhotekoshi floods in Rasuwa on the 26th of August.
