PM’s Office commemorates Gen Z martyrs

Kathmandu: Nepal is observing Gen Z Martyrs’ Day for the first time today, commemorating the young people who lost their lives during the Gen Z movement.

On the occasion, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has commemorated the contribution of the martyrs through a social media message and called for moving forward with new thinking, technology, innovation and change.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the contribution of the martyrs who stood for new ideas, technology, innovation and change is unparalleled.

It expressed hope that the day would inspire everyone to work toward building a fair, transparent and prosperous Nepal, by combining the experience of the older generation with the aspirations of the new generation.

The Gen Z movement, held on September 8 and 9 last year, spread across the country with demands for good governance, accountability, action against corruption and political instability, as well as opposition to the government’s ban on social media.

The movement resulted in the resignation of then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the formation of an interim government.

The government has declared those who lost their lives in the movement as martyrs and decided to observe Gen Z Martyrs’ Day.

A nationwide public holiday has also been declared today.

The issues raised by the Gen Z movement—including good governance, transparency, corruption control, accountability and public-service reform—continue to remain central to Nepal’s political and administrative debate.

The Prime Minister’s Office has said building a new Nepal requires combining the experience of the older generation with the energy, ideas and technological capabilities of the new generation.
