Yad Vashem breaks borders: First international Education center in Germany signals global shift in holocaust remembrance

July 3, Kathmandu: Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, announced the establishment of a new Holocaust Education Center in Munich, Germany, marking the Jerusalem-based institution’s first official facility outside Israel.

The center will be located at Karolinenplatz in central Munich, a site chosen for its strategic location, infrastructure, and deep historical symbolic weight as the birthplace of the Nazi Party. Supported by the German federal government, the initiative aims to combat rising global antisemitism and Holocaust distortion by utilizing Yad Vashem’s victim-centered pedagogical expertise.

While anchored in Bavaria, the project will serve as a nationwide platform. Yad Vashem plans to open an interactive extension in Leipzig, Saxony, and expand its partnership with North Rhine-Westphalia to develop a nationwide cooperation model.

Originally conceived during a 2023 meeting between Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan and former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the project has since been endorsed by current Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The Munich center is backed by local financial commitments and is projected to become fully operational within three years.
