World Intellectual Property Day being marked today

Kathmandu: Today marks World Intellectual Property Day, which is being observed in various countries with a focus on innovation and creativity.

The day has been celebrated annually on April 26 since 2000, following its initiation by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

The organisation, a specialised body of the United Nations, coordinates international collaboration for global intellectual heritage services, including policymaking and the exchange of related information.

It assists governments, stakeholders, and creators in efforts to conserve and manage intellectual heritage, with a continued focus on fostering innovation and creativity worldwide.

Copyrights, patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, among others, are recognised as forms of intellectual heritage.

Experts view that the conservation of intellectual property has become increasingly challenging in the digital era.

Unauthorised use, duplication, and digital theft must be addressed through effective laws, proper implementation, and increased public awareness.

In Nepal as well, concerned stakeholders have highlighted the need for legal and policy reforms related to intellectual properties. RSS
