Number of Aquatic Migratory Bird Species Rises in Chitwan National Park, Overall Population Declines
Chitwan, Jan 16: The diversity of winter aquatic migratory birds in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and surrounding areas has increased, according to a recent census conducted from January 8 to 10.
The survey recorded 62 species this year, up from 55 species last year, with new additions including the Tilahari (ibisbill) and several eagle species. However, the total population of migratory birds has declined, dropping from 8,086 last year to 5,848 this year. The population of Ruddy Shelducks notably fell from 4,107 to 2,470.
Authorities have attributed the decline to human pressure, pollution, and the presence of invasive species, despite the increase in species diversity.
