Digital Transformation Key to Nepal’s Progress: Minister Kharel

Kathmandu, Jan 12: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel has emphasized that digital transformation is crucial for good governance, transparency, and curbing corruption, ultimately contributing to Nepal’s prosperity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Nepal AI Dialogue Series, jointly organized by the National AI Centre and the Asian Development Bank, Minister Kharel said the dialogue would play a vital role in implementing Nepal’s AI Policy, especially as the country advances its “Digital Highway” initiative.

“Today’s AI policy dialogue is more than policy formulation; it symbolizes the convergence of technology, governance, and the aspirations of the new generation,” he said. He also highlighted the Gen Z movement, noting it was not merely a protest but a declaration of values and principles promoting accountability.

Minister Kharel pointed out that the foundation for digital transformation has been laid with the adoption of Nepal’s AI Policy and the establishment of the National AI Centre. “This is just the beginning; the real test is implementation—turning policy into services that drive employment, innovation, and impact every citizen’s life,” he added.

He further stressed that AI is reshaping global sectors including the economy, healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, offering Nepal an opportunity to overcome challenges like difficult geography, weak infrastructure, and limited resources.

Also speaking at the event, Ministry Secretary Radhika Aryal underscored the importance of the dialogue in advancing digital transformation through effective implementation of the National AI Policy.
