AI essential for holistic development: Minister Kharel
Kathmandu, Nov 21: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel has emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial for the country’s comprehensive development.
Speaking at a programme titled “AI for Inclusive Growth: Building Nepal’s AI-ready Future” held in Kathmandu on Friday, the Minister said the government has placed high priority on advancing and adopting AI technologies. He noted that effective use of AI can play a vital role in reducing the digital divide.
Minister Kharel said the government has already formed the National AI Council and the National AI Centre in line with the AI Policy 2082, underscoring that Nepal is committed to ensuring that AI is used in an inclusive, ethical, safe, and beneficial manner.
“Our AI policy is clear and principle-based. We are focused on making AI accessible and beneficial for all,” he said. He added that expanding digital literacy would help empower women, youth, and marginalized communities, while promoting data privacy and responsible innovation.
The Minister highlighted that AI has been prioritized across key sectors such as agriculture, health, education, and tourism. He said the government is working to build an environment that supports start-ups, enabling young people to benefit from AI-driven economic opportunities.
However, he stressed that government efforts alone are not enough. Collaboration among the private sector, academia, and international partners is essential to drive meaningful progress. Minister Kharel noted that Nepal’s close relations with India provide a strong foundation for cooperation in research, skills development, and knowledge exchange.
