Government pushes for electrification of transport and cooking: Energy Minister Ghising
Kathmandu: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising has emphasized the government’s commitment to electrifying transportation and cooking.
Speaking at the 29th anniversary of the Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) today, Minister Ghising said electric vehicle use is increasing, but more efforts are needed to promote induction stoves and alternative energy in households.
He added that the government is revising policies to facilitate EV charging stations and is preparing an action plan to systematically promote solar energy in irrigation.
Minister Ghising also encouraged private sector investment in wind power, promising government support for interested developers. He praised AEPC for its work in remote areas and stressed the need for more effective efforts as alternative energy adoption grows.
Energy Secretary Chiranjeevi Chataut highlighted AEPC’s role in mitigating climate change, improving energy efficiency, and expanding electricity access, especially in rural areas. AEPC Executive Director Nawaraj Dhakal said the center has implemented eight carbon reduction projects generating $36 million, partnered with 136 local levels, and created 40,000 jobs.
The center aims to reach 1 million households in five years and 3.7 million households using all technologies.
At the event, Minister Ghising also released the solar thermal roadmap and implementation plan.
