Do not use damaged buildings without a technical assessment: NDRRMA

Kathmandu, Sept 22: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has urged all not to use buildings damaged in the Gen-Z protests without a technical assessment.

NDRRMA spokesperson Shanti Mahat said that using such buildings for any purpose, including painting, without testing may increase risks, and therefore, it is requested to use them only after confirming that they are safe through a technical assessment. Mahat mentioned that it has been requested not to carry out painting and coloring without assessing the structural condition of the heavily damaged structures.

“We urge that painting and coloring not be done without assessing the structural condition of the heavily damaged buildings”, reads a statement by the Authority. According to the preliminary report from the police, it is said that more than 600 buildings were completely destroyed by fire, and over 1,500 buildings suffered partial damage during the September 8 and 9 protests.

The NDRRMA has announced that it has started working by forming a committee with the participation of concerned bodies to prepare a framework for assessing the damage.
