Visiting Pakistan parliamentary delegation calls on Speaker Ghimire

August 20, Kathmandu: Speaker of the House Devraj Ghimire held a courtesy meeting with a Pakistani parliamentary delegation at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the Hindu Kush Himalaya Parliamentarians’ Meet 2025, which concluded in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

Led by Pakistani parliamentarian Munaza Hassan, the delegation was welcomed by Speaker Ghimire, who emphasised the strong bilateral ties between Nepal and Pakistan and the potential for regional cooperation. The discussion focused on shared challenges in the Himalayan region, particularly climate change, sustainable development, and livelihoods.

Speaker Ghimire stressed the need for a unified approach to address these issues, advocating for collaborative policies to tackle the region’s environmental and socio-economic concerns. The Speaker highlighted opportunities for enhanced trade, connectivity, and tourism between the two nations, noting that parliamentary cooperation could play a pivotal role in realising these prospects.

He underscored the importance of joint efforts to address the pressing challenges faced by mountain communities. Hassan, leading the Pakistani delegation, expressed gratitude for Nepal’s successful organisation of the Hindu Kush Himalaya Parliamentarians’ Meet 2025.

She commended Nepal’s proactive role in mitigating climate change impacts and preserving the mountain ecosystem, emphasising the importance of regional collaboration in these efforts. Pakistan’s Ambassador to Nepal, Abrar H. Hashmi, was also present during the meeting

The two-day parliamentary meet, supported by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), included representatives from Nepal, India, China, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Pakistan. Discussions center on climate change, biodiversity loss, disaster risk, and environmental degradation, aiming to foster policy frameworks for regional cooperation.
