NA Vice Chair Ghimire urges climate justice
Kathmandu, Aug 19: Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly, Bimala Ghimire, has said Nepal, as the country of Gautam Buddha, should spread a message of climate justice in the countries belonging to the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH).
Vice Chairperson Ghimire said it while addressing the high level parliamentary roundtable as part of the HKH Parliamentarians’ Meet-2025 in the federal capital on Tuesday. Other countries can listen to the message not only of peace but also of the climate justice, she said, adding that climate change is a common global problem, impacting the countries irrespective of the size, location and economic status.
An integrated law is needed to tackle this pressing concern for the world, according to her. “It is inherent right of a human to inhale clean air. Biodiversity in the HKH can be preserved and managed well to ensure benefit from it,” the Vice Chairperson viewed, adding that time has come to work on a common agenda on building a climate-resilient society and nature.
Ghimire also underlined the need for establishing a regional forum to continue dialogue and discussions among the HKH countries on climate change and environment. Sharing of experience and knowledge on climate change, bi0diversity and air pollution among HKH countries helps build collaborate and cooperation to cope with problems.
Also addressing the session were House of Representatives Members Yogesh Gauchan and Sobhita Gautam. The lawmakers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan also expressed their views on the occasion.
