Federalism is adornment of democracy : Shekhar Kumar Singh

Kathmandu: Vice Chair of the Democratic Socialist Party Nepal, Shekhar Kumar Singh, has highlighted the need to amend the constitution to improve the rights of Madhesi people.

Talking to RSS under the RSS regular coverage “RSS dialogue with lawmaker”, Singh, a member in the National Assembly from the Madhesh Province, said,” The constitution is yet to guarantee numerous rights of the Madhesi community.”

According to him, education, healthcare, employment, and development are the major concerns of the Madhesi community. “In terms of development, Madhesh is lagging behind the other provinces. The community is underrepresented in the executive, judiciary, and legislature. Whether it’s the constitution or other bodies, their proportional representation remains lacking.”

He called for amending the constitution to address these gaps, ensuring that the country’s main law promotes the advancement of the rights of Madhesi citizens.

He further stressed that economic development of the country should be the top priority of political parties.

As he said, it is not good for the country to see Nepali youths leaving the country for foreign employment, but the remittance has played a significant role in supporting and sustaining national economy.

Singh was of the opinion of promoting tourism and agricultural sectors to also create jobs for youths.

He sought transparency in the state’s investment in education, health and employment. “Without transparency, the goal for good governance remains elusive,” he said.

He urged the three-tier government to promote transparency and deliver in the interests of citizens. He underlined the need of appropriate and adequate investment in the agricultural, industrial and tourism sectors. In his view, the country could achieve economic self-sufficiency by strengthening these sectors.

The lawmaker said, “Federalism is an adornment of democracy. In absence of federalism, our journey to the National Assembly would remain impossible. Federalism drives the entire country towards the path of development.”
