Worker’s contribution significant in country’s development: Fromer President Bhandari
May 1, Kathmandu: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said the contribution of workers is significant in the country’s social, economic and physical development.
In a message of best wishes on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, she stressed the need to ensure rights, including minimum wages, social security and a safe working place, as most of the Nepali workers were in the informal sector.
Taking to the social networking site X, the former President wrote – “Though the contribution of Nepali migrant workers is the backbone of the economy, they are exploited and at risk. Lack of employment and brain drain of the young generation has become a matter of concern, while women and domestic workers are still neglected.”
Former President Bhandari pointed out that the government, employers and trade unions should carry out coordinated efforts for the protection of the rights of labourers and the implementation of laws related to labour as well as to guarantee dignified labour, proper wages and social security.
