‘Proportional electoral constituencies should be reserved for women’
Kathmandu, March 10: National Assembly (NA) member Bishnu Kumari Sapkota has stated that proportional electoral constituencies should be reserved for women to ensure their strong representation in Parliament.
“The country’s electoral system has become expensive, which calls for amendments. However, the proportional electoral system enshrined in the Constitution should not be removed,” she noted, arguing that this system has enabled women, Madhesi, Dalit, and indigenous nationalities to enter Parliament.
Lawmaker Sapkota emphasized that she has been consistently advocating for women’s rights in the National Assembly. “Until and unless women are empowered to assume leadership positions, violence against women will not stop,” she stated.
She stressed the need for careful implementation of constitutional provisions to address the numerous challenges facing the country. However, she also highlighted the necessity of amending the Constitution to ensure political stability.
“Women’s rights should in no way be curtailed while amending the Constitution,” NA member Sapkota asserted.
She urged the government to take a firm stance on good governance. “Both the bureaucracy and the political leadership must be honest and accountable in delivering governance,” she added.
To strengthen the federal system, Sapkota argued that local governments should be reinforced. However, she also asserted that the existing number of local governments should be reduced through a merger process for greater efficiency.
