Nepal reaffirms commitment to Human Rights at UN Human Rights Council

February 25, Kathmandu: Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, on Monday addressed the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland emphasizing the country’s dedication to protecting and promoting human rights. Despite limited resources, Minister Dr Rana noted that Nepal remained a leader in advancing human rights.
In her speech, Minister Dr Rana explained that Nepal’s constitution included fundamental rights such as civil liberties, political freedoms, and economic, social, and cultural rights. “The Government of Nepal is committed to democratic values, the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary,” she stated. She credited the coalition government, formed by political parties with a history of advocating for democracy and human rights, for this commitment.
The Minister highlighted Nepal’s peace process, which resolved a decade-long armed conflict, as a model recognized worldwide. She said the government is working to complete the remaining tasks of this process through transitional justice legislation.
The Foreign Minister also addressed Nepal’s efforts in governance, stating the constitution ensures at least one-third representation of women in federal and provincial parliaments and 40 per cent in local governments while protecting the rights of minorities. She confirmed Nepal’s support for the independence of its National Human Rights Commission, which has maintained an ‘A’ grade in global accreditation since its establishment. Minister Dr Rana added that Nepal stood firm on press freedom.
On climate change, Minister Dr Rana discussed its impact on Nepal and the country’s push for climate justice internationally. She announced that Nepal will host the ‘Sagarmatha Dialogue’ in Kathmandu this May, themed “Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity,” to engage the global community.
Minister Dr Rana concluded by announcing Nepal’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term, reflecting its focus on human rights. She urged UN member states to support Nepal’s bid, calling for cooperation in global human rights efforts.
