NA Session: government’s attention drawn to various contemporary issues

Kathmandu: Members of the National Assembly (NA) drew the government’s attention to various issues including the need for it to be more accountable to the parliament and for further empowerment of constitutional bodies.

Expressing their views during a special session of the Upper House on Monday, they drew the government’s attention to the ‘detention’ of former Chief Justice Cholendra Shusher JB Rana, the loss from floods and landslides, necessity for market monitoring during festivals, among others.

Nepali Communist Party (NCP) lawmaker Jayanti Devi Rai alerted the government towards the impact of continuous rainfall for four days in various parts of the country. She demanded the reinstatement of national highways soon.

Another lawmaker from the NCP, Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma, called for accelerating market monitoring to prevent possible price gouging and artificial shortages of daily essentials including foodstuff, salt and edible oil on the eve of the festival seasons.

Chandra Bahadur KC of Nepali Congress expressed his concern over the ‘detention’ of former CJ, stressing that the government should abide by the rule of law. Mina Singh Rakhal of CPN (UML) demanded adequate relief to survivors of disaster-related incidents.

Somnath Portel of CPN (UML) urged the government to prioritise the search, treatment and rehabilitation of the displaced following the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system.

Mohammed Khalid of Janata Samajbadi Party, Nepal called for further empowering the constitutional commissions. He drew the government’s attention to the urgent need to immediately advance the process of appointing office-bearers to such commissions, providing adequate budget, and refraining from merging or dissolving the commissions. He also urged the mandatory implementation of the constitutional commissions’ recommendations.

In today’s session of the upper house, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, on behalf of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, presented the annual report of the National Natural Resources and Finance Commission for the fiscal year 2081/82 BS.

The NA shall meet again at 1:15 pm on Thursday, October 1.
