PM Shah, UN Secretary-General Guterres meet

New York, Sept 25: Prime Minister Balendra Shah held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.

Prime Minister Shah, who is here in the course of attending the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly, had the meeting with the Secretary-General at the UN Headquarters at 6.30 pm local time Thursday evening (4.15 am Friday) before addressing the UNGA, the PM Secretariat informed.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shah extended gratitude to Secretary-General Guterres for his goodwill toward Nepal and congratulated the latter on his successful tenure.

Highlighting the colossal losses Nepal suffered due to the disaster in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa, Prime Minister Shah noted that the risk of floods from glacial lake outburst remains high.

On the occasion, Secretary-General Guterres expressed deep sympathy for the loss of life and property in the Bhotekoshi disaster and stated that the United Nations stands in solidarity with Nepal on climate issues. The Secretary-General also praised the young Nepali delegation.

Recalling his visit to Nepal as a tourist in 1978, Secretary-General Guterres expressed his commitment to continue supporting Nepal even after his term ends.

Also, there was a discussion between Prime Minister Shah and Secretary-General Guterres about the rehabilitation of riverside residents and green reconstruction.

Matters related to the extension of the timeline for Nepal’s graduation from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) list were also discussed on the occasion, it is stated. RSS
