CALI membership will benefit Nepal on enhancing legislative capacity and utilizing digital technology

Kathmandu: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Sobita Gautam, claimed that obtaining membership of the Council of Asian Legislative Institution (CALI) would benefit Nepal on exchanging knowledge, experience and best practices related to law-making and formulation.

Minister Gautam said this while responding to the queries raised in today’s meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) during the discussion on the proposal ‘Let the Government of Nepal approve with its declaration regarding joining the Council of Asian Legislative Institutions (CALI).’

She argued that it would help enhance legislative capacity and facilitate the exchange of support in the use of digital technology.

“With CALI membership, research, training, and expert-level collaboration will benefit lawmaking in Nepal, and it will be possible to work on strengthening regional legislative cooperation and international participation,” Law Minister Gautam added.

She further clarified that CALI’s goal is to jointly address legislative challenges arising from impactful global issues like digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and climate change. The meeting unanimously passed the proposal.

Lawmakers raising queries regarding the proposal demanded paying attention to Nepal’s national interest, financial obligations, and long-term benefits while joining an international organization.

Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal informed the house that no notice of amendment on the proposal had been received from any lawmakers. Next meeting of the House of Representatives will be held at 1.00 pm on September 16.
