PM Shah calls for global cooperation to address climate change impacts

Mustang: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called for greater global cooperation to reduce and manage the risks and disasters caused by climate change.

In a congratulatory message sent to the Gharapjhong Climate Conference in Mustang, Prime Minister Shah said climate change mitigation and adaptation are a shared responsibility of the global community.

He said Nepal will draw the attention of the international community to the climate-related problems, losses and possible solutions facing the country at the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the serious impacts of climate change on Nepal’s Himalayan, hill and Tarai regions.

He said rising global temperatures are causing glaciers to melt and burst, rivers to swell, water sources to dry up and weather patterns to become increasingly unpredictable.

He said climate change is affecting people’s lives, agriculture and biodiversity, particularly in the Himalayan region.

Prime Minister Shah also stressed the need for stronger cooperation among the federal, provincial and local governments to address climate change impacts.

The two-day Gharapjhong Climate Conference was inaugurated today by Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Gita Chaudhary. Heads of local governments and District Coordination Committees from across the country are attending the conference.

The conference is also being held amid the devastating loss of lives and property caused by the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods triggered by the August 26 disaster.
