DHM cautions residents along river basin areas in view of heavy rain

Kanchanpur: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division has issued weather alert in view of heavy rainfall in Dodhara Chandani, Bhimdutta, and Bedkot municipalities of Kanchanpur.

The Division, in its weather forecast bulletin, stated that people should stay prepared and remain alert with the possibility of heavy rainfall in these three municipalities.

There is a risk of significant rise in water flow in smaller rivers, it is stated. Sunil Chand, the disaster focal person at Bedkot Municipality, informed that the municipality is in a state of preparedness.

“We have advised the municipal police and ward chairs to stay alert,” he said, “Also we have kept the necessary materials ready.” Amrit Bk, the disaster focal person at Dodhara Chandani Municipality, also confirmed their preparedness.

The Weather Forecasting Division has issued a notice calling for concerned authorities to increase river monitoring, inform local governments and communities, and start necessary preparations. Incessant rainfall has been occurring in Kanchanpur since early this morning.

After water level in the Mahakali River crossed the alert threshold, the Indian side has also stopped movement at the Sharada Barrage in Banbas, which connects Nepal and India.

According to Jeevan Gurung, the In-charge of the Darchauki Area Police Office, the water flow reached 133,888 cubic meters per second in the Mahakali River as measured at 5.00 pm today.

Once the water flow in the Mahakali River exceeds 100,000 cubic meters per second, the movement of four-wheeler vehicles has been restricted at the Sharada Barrage citing security reasons.
