Info Ministry’s appeal to not spread unverified information, upsetting images and videos

Kathmandu: The Ministry of Information and Communications has appealed to all internet users and mass media not to spread sensitive images and videos and unverified information relating to the recent natural disaster that hit hard Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts.

At such hour of adversity, the media and general public must be cautious to curb the spread of baseless, disturbing and sensitive information, images and videos which impact people negatively and even hamper rescue and relief campaign, the Ministry reminded.

Releasing an appeal today, joint secretary and spokesperson at the Information Ministry, Uday Ranamagar, urged one and all to rely on the information which are verified and disseminated by the Home Ministry, District Administration Offices, security agencies and local disaster management committees.

“Unverified, baseless, false and AI-generated images and information that panic people must not be disseminated,” he underscored. The Ministry further urged everyone not to post and repost the heartrending images and videos of disaster on social networking sites.

Such contents add pain to the households and relatives, the official added. Magar stated in the appeal that social media should be utilized to spread factual information, but the posts and reposts of the disturbing contents further afflict the families which are already hit hard by the calamity. It is time to show human sensitivity, according to him.
