Koshi Chief Minister Karki insists on practice of fact-based, responsible journalism

Biratnagar: Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has stressed the need for practicing journalism based on facts and credibility. He stressed that the media should be operated in the interests of the nation, society and citizens.

Launching the ‘Journalist Accident Insurance’ organised by the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Koshi Province, here today, the Chief Minister said that fair and responsible journalism could further strengthen society. He urged the insurance company to ensure that injured journalists receive insurance facilities in a convenient and hassle-free process.

He also pledged that the province government would ensure that budgetary constraints do not hinder the Province Communications Academy from implementing programmes and initiatives in the interests of journalists. He went on to emphasize that insurance companies have a significant role to play in supporting the business community and promotion retention within the industry.

Province Minister for Internal Affairs and Law, Gombu Sherpa, expressed the view that the insured would benefit from the accident insurance programme as journalism is itself a challenging profession.

According to him, the province government has agreed to pay the insurance premiums of 1,200 journalists for one year, he assured that the programme would continue if the FNJ realised the need.

FNJ Koshi Province President Bharat Khadka, FNJ central member Kamal Rimal, FNF Koshi Province Vice President Kumod Adhikari, Morang Chapter President Sushila Pathak, Rastriya Beema Company Limited Manager Niranjan Acharya and the company’s Koshi Province Chief Rajendra Maharjan expressed their views on the rights of journalists and the effectiveness of the insurance facility.
