According to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Dharmaraj Gosain, the programme included eye examinations for 907 prisoners. The screening detected various eye-related problems, including cataracts and vision impairment.
Twenty people were diagnosed with cataracts, while 421 received necessary eye medicines. The hospital has planned to provide free cataract surgery to those diagnosed with the condition.
Similarly, 146 inmates were provided with free spectacles and medicines to support their reading and writing, while 92 people were referred to health facilities for further treatment.
The hospital’s technical team also provided information on eye health, preventive measures and proper eye care during the camp. The hospital said it has reached agreements with several prisons to expand eye treatment and screening services for inmates and prison staff.
As part of its outreach programme, Nepal Eye Hospital also conducted an eye screening camp at a Gurdwara in Kupandole, where 214 people were examined. Eight cataract cases were identified, while 100 people received free spectacles.
Likewise, an eye camp held at the Ageing Care Centre in Sukedhara examined 105 people. Nine were diagnosed with cataracts, and 22 received free spectacles.
The hospital said such outreach programmes aim to improve access to eye care services, particularly for people who may face difficulties accessing regular eye examinations and treatment.
