Government makes three-point pledge to ensure justice for Garima’s family
Kathmandu, Aug 23: The government has reached a three-point agreement with the family of three-year-old Garima Chaudhary, pledging to address their demands and take steps toward ensuring justice in the case.
The agreement was reached during a meeting held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday evening between Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, other ministers, government representatives and Garima’s parents.
Under the agreement, the government will review existing laws concerning crimes and punishments and recommend new legal provisions for dealing with heinous crimes in line with public expectations. A seven-member committee will be formed by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs to undertake the review and submit its report within a week.
The government has also agreed to establish a memorial for Garima in accordance with her family’s wishes. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development will coordinate with the concerned local authorities for the construction of the memorial.
Similarly, the Home Minister’s Office has assured the family that Garima’s funeral will be conducted in accordance with their customs and traditions.
The agreement was signed by Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobhita Gautam, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary.
Garima’s father Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and mother Manmati Chaudhary signed the agreement on behalf of the victim’s family.
The government and the family have agreed to address the family’s demands while continuing the judicial process in connection with the incident.
