Karunamaya chariot procession to conclude with Bhoto display this Saturday

June 19, Lalitpur: The historic 1,600-year-old chariot procession of Karunamaya Arya Avalokiteshvara—the Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion—will reach its grand finale this Saturday with the traditional display of the Bhoto (jewel-studded vest) at Jawalakhel.

Lalitpur Metropolitan City-4 Ward Chairman Santosh Khadka confirmed that final preparations are underway at the Lalit Mandap.

Revered by the Newar community as Bunga Dyaḥ, the deity has been processed through Pulchowk, Mangalbazar, and Lagankhel over the last month.

Following the Bhoto Jatra, the idol will be carried in an artistic khat (palanquin) back to its home temple in Bungamati. Though deeply rooted in Buddhist tradition, this ancient celebration of rain and prosperity is widely known across Nepal today as the Rato Machhindranath Rath Yatra.
