Issue of reducing impact on the mountains is a priority: NC

Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress (NC) has prioritised issues ranging from the search for ways to reduce the impact on the Himalayas to overall environmental conservation campaigns.

The third meeting of the Central Policy, Research, and Training Academy of the Nepali Congress, held in Kathmandu on Wednesday, decided to form a ‘Climate Change Awareness Subcommittee’ and assigned tasks ranging from exploring ways to reduce the impact of climate change on the mountains.

The head of the Academy and party vice president, Bishwa Prakash Sharma, chaired the meeting in the presence of NC President Gagan Kumar Thapa. Sharma informed that the meeting discussed the impact of climate change on the Himalayas and the initiatives to be undertaken for its mitigation.

He stated that there was also discussion on the increasing risk of climate-related disasters due to the accelerated melting of glaciers caused by the globally rising temperature.

Vice President Sharma takes special interest in climate change and the preservation of the environment in the Himalayas. Last year, during the ascent of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, he reached the Third Camp located at 7,200 meters.

Similarly, at the meeting, the Deputy Head of the Academy, Madhu Acharya, had presented a proposal related to the internal code of conduct.

Likewise, six coordinators of various subcommittees selected from the previous meeting of the Academy had presented their concepts and work plans.

At the same time, the meeting, on the proposal of the head of the Academy, Sharma, decided to form seven additional thematic subcommittees and selected their coordinators.
