Minister Khanal stresses long-term planning in local governance

Kathmandu, May 17: Foreign Affairs Minister Shisir Khanal has urged local governments to prioritise long-term development planning over short-term political interests, saying municipalities must focus on sustainable progress for future generations.
Speaking at a programme organised by Tokha Municipality to collect suggestions for its upcoming policies, programmes and budget, Minister Khanal said local bodies should avoid short-sighted approaches driven by immediate political gains.
“Local governments have the opportunity to work for the coming generation for the next 20 to 25 years. They should not adopt a shortsighted attitude,” he said.
Khanal, also the lawmaker from Kathmandu Constituency No. 6, suggested that Tokha Municipality should consider developing well-managed settlements in its northern belt, noting that population density there remains lower compared to the southern areas.
He also said the promotion of Tokha’s traditional Saturday bazaar, which reflects indigenous Newari culture, could help boost tourism, while homestay-based tourism could create additional income opportunities.
