NAIMA seeks clear rules on EV motor power in Nepal

May 17, Kathmandu: The Nepal Automobile Importers and Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) has called for a clear and uniform system to verify the motor power of electric vehicles (EVs) in Nepal amid growing public debate on the issue.

In a statement, the association said confusion has increased due to different interpretations of EV motor capacity in recent weeks. NAIMA said it had already discussed the matter with the Finance Minister, Industry Minister, and Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister.

The association said EVs imported into Nepal are based on official documents and certifications provided by internationally recognized manufacturers. It added that the same vehicle model may have different specifications in different countries depending on local rules and market needs, which is common in the global automobile industry.

NAIMA said Nepal still lacks a clear national system to test and certify EV motor power, leading to confusion in the market.

The association stressed that EV-related issues should be judged on the basis of verified information and international standards. It warned that unverified claims could affect consumer confidence, investment, and the long-term growth of Nepal’s electric vehicle sector.
