Nepal’s International Wellness Day goes global, marked across diplomatic missions worldwide

April 17, Kathmandu: Nepal marked the first-ever International Wellness Day on Wednesday with a series of events at home and across its diplomatic missions worldwide, promoting holistic well-being and healthy living.
The observance follows the adoption of a United Nations General Assembly resolution declaring April 15 as International Wellness Day, following an initiative led by Nepal. The day promotes the concept of wellness as a holistic approach to well-being that goes beyond the absence of illness, focusing instead on balanced physical, mental, and social health, as well as healthier lifestyle practices.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal emphasised the importance of integrating wellness into daily life, calling it essential for both individual health and broader societal harmony.
Nepal’s diplomatic missions in major global capitals echoed the message with vibrant programs. In Tokyo, Japan, the Embassy showcased Nepali wellness products such as Shilajit, Chiuri oil and Himalayan bath salts, alongside a traditional singing bowl demonstration, highlighting preventive health practices. In Seoul, South Korea, participants marked the day with a hike at Namsan Mountain, underscoring the role of nature in mental and physical well-being.
Similarly, in Moscow, Russia, a special program highlighted Nepal’s identity as a wellness destination, featuring discussions on holistic health and traditional Nepali cuisine. In Ottawa, Canada, the Embassy hosted a virtual session engaging the Nepali diaspora through yoga and breathing exercises, while also highlighting Nepal’s initiative in advancing the global observance.
Across the region, missions organised community-focused activities. The Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, held a “Wellness Walk” followed by a traditional wellness breakfast, while in Guangzhou, China, a “Holistic Wellness for All” program featured yoga, meditation and cultural demonstrations. In Colombo, Sri Lanka, the day was observed with discussions on blending traditional knowledge with modern lifestyles at a historic temple setting.
In West Asia, the Embassy in Muscat, Oman, organised a diplomatic hiking event that combined wellness with environmental awareness, including a clean-up initiative along the trail.
Adding a strong community dimension, the Consulate General in San Francisco, California, hosted a collaborative event with local Nepali organisations, where the Mayor of Richmond proclaimed April 14 as “Nepal Day,” recognising the contributions of the Nepali community.
The coordinated global observance reflects Nepal’s growing effort to position itself as a hub for wellness, drawing on its rich traditions of yoga, Ayurveda and nature-based living, while bringing communities together across continents in a shared pursuit of well-being.
