Lawmakers under proportional category have vital role: PM Shah

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called on the lawmakers elected via proportional category to not limit themselves to a specific area but work for the interests of the oppressed and marginalised people.

During a discussion held at the PM’s Office, Singha Durbar on Wednesday, PM Shah reminded that the lawmakers under the proportional cluster had a huge role and could contribute well in mainstreaming the marginalised community.

“You can devote yourself to law-making and the development of the entire nation. The directly elected people’s representatives are focused on their constituencies, but you can work for a broader goal,” the PM reminded.

PM Shah said the proportional system is for making parliament full and inclusive. So, they could work confidently on law-making and parliamentary coordination.

After some lawmakers viewed that they were not treated equally as the directly elected ones, PM Shah made it clear that it was not discrimination at all because a separate meeting was for in-depth discussion and understanding. It is also an initiative to address particular issues with special focus, he added.

The head of government also vowed collaboration for five years and stressed the utilisation of technology to address the problems. The digital medium was always open for receiving and hearing suggestions and follow-up, according to him.
