Nepal marks 263rd Army Day at UN Headquarters, highlights peacekeeping legacy

Kathmandu, April 12: Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations hosted a reception at the UN Headquarters in New York to mark the 263rd Nepali Army Day, alongside 68 years of Nepal’s contribution to United Nations peace operations.

The event brought together UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, ambassadors, diplomats, military and police advisers, UN officials, friends of Nepal, and former military officers.

Speaking on the occasion, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa, highlighted the long-standing legacy of the Nepali Army as one of the country’s oldest institutions, built on service, sacrifice, and professionalism. He underscored its role in safeguarding national sovereignty while contributing to global peace and security through UN peacekeeping missions.

Ambassador Thapa noted that more than 160,000 Nepali peacekeepers have served in various UN missions over the decades, reflecting Nepal’s strong commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation.

He also expressed appreciation to Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix for recognizing the dedication and professionalism of Nepali peacekeepers serving around the world.
