International Day of Human Space Flight observed today

Kathmandu, April 12: The International Day of Human Space Flight is being observed around the world today, marking the historic beginning of human space exploration.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight in 2011, recognizing its global significance. The day commemorates April 12, 1961, when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space, opening a new era in space exploration.

According to the United Nations, Gagarin’s pioneering mission marked a major milestone for humanity, paving the way for continued scientific advancement and exploration of outer space for peaceful purposes.

The observance highlights the importance of space science and technology in supporting sustainable development goals, improving human welfare, and promoting international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space.

The UN General Assembly has reaffirmed that space exploration should be carried out in the common interest of all humanity, with its benefits shared among all nations.
