Forest fires intensify across western Terai as April peak sets in

April 8, Kathmandu: Forest fire incidents are rising across the western Terai as April—the peak wildfire season and typically the driest month—sets in, heightening risks to forests and nearby communities.
A wildfire broke out last night in the Durga Community Forest at Koilabas in Dang Deukhuri, reflecting the seasonal surge in such incidents.
Environmental Specialist Bhupendra Das said forest fires tend to increase rapidly once rainfall subsides, even for a few days. Although parts of the region received some rainfall recently, the drying conditions have again triggered fire outbreaks.
Experts say prolonged dry weather, rising temperatures, and human activities contribute to the spread of fires during this period. Authorities warn that uncontrolled fires damage biodiversity, threaten wildlife, and worsen air quality.
Officials have urged communities to remain alert and avoid activities that could ignite fires, as the risk is expected to persist in the coming weeks.
