Nepal–Saudi Arabia mark 49 years of diplomatic ties, new avenues of cooperation on horizon

March 15, Kathmandu: The 49th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Saudi Arabia is being marked today, highlighting nearly five decades of growing cooperation between the two countries.
Diplomatic relations between Kathmandu and Riyadh were formally established on March 15, 1977. Since then, labour migration has remained a central pillar of the partnership, with Saudi Arabia among the major destinations for Nepali migrant workers. Remittances sent by workers in the Kingdom continue to play an important role in Nepal’s economy.
As Saudi Arabia advances economic diversification under Saudi Vision 2030, observers see growing prospects for cooperation beyond labour. The Kingdom’s push to expand sectors such as technology, tourism, sports and entertainment could create new opportunities for Nepali youth, particularly in information technology and digital services.
Saudi Arabia is also emerging as a major hub for global eSports and gaming industries, while Nepali youth have increasingly become enthusiastic participants in competitive gaming, opening another potential avenue for collaboration.
Analysts also point to opportunities in agriculture and trade, as well as tourism, cultural exchanges and broader people-to-people connections, as areas where the relationship could deepen as the two countries approach half a century of diplomatic ties.
