International Mother Language Day observed worldwide

Kathmandu: International Mother Language Day is being observed worldwide today to promote unity through multilingualism and multiculturalism.

UNESCO has designated the 2026 theme as “Youth voices on multilingual education.” The day was first proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999, following an initiative by Bangladesh, and was later endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2002.

The observance emphasizes the importance of languages in cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue, inclusive education, and preserving heritage.

In Nepal, the Language Commission held a programme on Friday evening with the participation of Minister Anil Kumar Sinha, Secretary Mukunda Prasad Niraula, and Bangladesh’s Ambassador Shafiqur Rahman.
