Veteran Actor Sunil Thapa Cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat
Kathmandu, Feb 8 — The last rites of veteran Nepali film actor Sunil Thapa were performed at Pashupati Aryaghat on Sunday with state honors.
His mortal remains were draped in the national flag of Nepal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Nepali art, culture, and cinema over several decades. Prominent figures from the film industry, including actor Nir Shah, musician Shambhujeet Baskota, representatives of the Film Development Board, officials of various artiste associations, filmmakers, family members, and relatives attended the cremation ceremony and paid their final respects. Floral tributes were also offered.
Speaking at a condolence meeting held after the cremation, participants recalled Thapa’s remarkable artistic journey and stated that his legacy would remain everlasting in the history of Nepali cinema.
Thapa passed away on Saturday morning at Norvic International Hospital in Thapathali following a cardiac arrest. He was 68. After the post-mortem examination at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, his body was taken to Pashupati Aryaghat for the funeral rites.
Over a career spanning several decades, Sunil Thapa acted in numerous Nepali films and delivered many memorable performances. Filmmakers credited him with playing a significant role in elevating Nepali cinema and described his demise as an irreparable loss to the industry. Popularly known as “Rate Kainla,” Thapa was widely respected as a dedicated, hardworking, and experienced actor.
