Int’l Dairy Expo kicks off in Chitwan

Chitwan: An International Dairy Expo has kicked off on Sunday.

The event, organised by the Chitwan Chamber of Commerce and the Chitwan Dairy Producers’ Cooperatives Association, was inaugurated by Dr Dipak Kharal, Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

Secretary Kharal said the government was working to increase the export of Nepali products. Use of technology helps in minimising investment cost and increasing exports, he argued.

The Secretary, however, said all sides’ cooperation is imperative to boost exports. “Three tiers of government require increasing investment in agriculture and promoting self-entrepreneurship,” he viewed, adding that the time has come to prioritise the dairy sector.

He further said that the farmers engaging in dairy should be made financially self-reliant. Government is planning a programme in this regard, Kharel informed.

On the occasion, other experts, including the Vice Chancellor at the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Prof Dr Sharada Thapaliya, said it is essential to minimise cost in dairy products and maximise production.

The urgency of market diversification of Nepali dairy products was featured significantly on the occasion. There are over 100 stalls of Nepali and Indian dairy products in the exhibition.

It is estimated that 50,000 people would turn upto the event, thereby generating the proceeds of Rs 70 million. The exhibition runs for five days.
