HoR Polls Near: Women Outnumber Men in PR Closed List

Kathmandu, Feb 4: With just 29 days remaining for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections, women candidates outnumber men in the final closed list submitted by political parties under the proportional representation (PR) system.

According to the Election Commission, the finalised PR list includes a total of 3,135 candidates from 63 political parties. Of them, 1,772 are women, while 1,363 are men.

The Commission published the final closed list on Tuesday in line with Section 29 of the House of Representatives Member Election Act, 2074 BS, and Rule 16(2) of the Election Regulations framed under the Act.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission removed the names of 76 candidates from the original closed list after determining them to be ineligible for various reasons. Among those excluded were 21 individuals blacklisted by the Credit Information Centre and 25 candidates who were also listed under the proportional representation system for Provincial Assembly elections.

Similarly, 10 candidates were dropped for failing to pay the required fines, while one individual was removed for not being registered as a voter from the backward region they were listed to represent. In addition, the names of 10 candidates were withdrawn following requests from the respective political parties.

The Commission said the finalisation of the PR closed list marks a key milestone as preparations intensify for the March 5 parliamentary elections. RSS
