41 days left for election; candidates to receive Election symbols today
January 23, Kathmandu: With 41 days remaining until the House of Representatives election, candidates who have filed their nominations can withdraw their candidacy until 1:00 pm today, according to the Election Commission.
As per the election schedule, nominations may be withdrawn between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. The final list of candidates will be published from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Commission has stated that election symbols will be allotted to candidates between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm this evening.
Under the first-past-the-post electoral system, January 21 (Magh 7) was fixed for filing complaints related to candidacy. Complaints were registered between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm on that day. Following this, scrutiny of nomination papers and complaints was conducted, and the list of eligible candidates was published by Thursday evening.
A total of 3,486 candidates have registered nominations across 165 constituencies nationwide. Nomination filing was completed simultaneously across the country on January 20 (Magh 6). Among the total candidates, 3,089 are men, 396 women, and one from another gender category.
The House of Representatives election is scheduled for March 5 (Falgun 21). Of the total 275 members of the House, 165 will be elected through the first-past-the-post system, while 110 will be elected under the proportional representation system.
