Gagan Kumar Thapa–Led Nepali Congress Granted Official Recognition

Kathmandu, Jan 16: The Election Commission of Nepal has granted official recognition to the Nepali Congress led by Gagan Kumar Thapa.
A meeting of the Commission held today stated that the special general convention was conducted in accordance with the law and the party statute, and decided to update the details of the office-bearers elected through the special convention, according to the Commission.
Vice President of the Nepali Congress, Bishwo Prakash Sharma, who was elected through the recently held special general convention, said that the Election Commission made the decision in their favor based on established procedures and processes.
With this decision, Thapa has become the official chairperson of the Nepali Congress, along with the party’s election symbol—the tree—and the four-star flag.
The Commission said it granted recognition to the Thapa-led Nepali Congress on the grounds that 40 percent of general convention representatives are entitled to demand a convention, that a convention must be organized upon such a demand, that general convention representatives are the supreme authority under the party statute, and that no objections were raised regarding the demand for a special general convention.
