NC’s Special General Convention enters closed session
January 12, Kathmandu: The closed session of the Nepali Congress’ Special General Convention (SGC), is underway today—the second day of the event.
The convention started at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, yesterday. The inaugural session continued until late evening, with leaders from across the country stressing the need to reform the party’s leadership and working style.
Organizing a press conference today, the SGC publicity committee said the closed session began a short while ago in one of the halls at Bhrikutimandap. The session is being chaired by Shyam Kumar Khadka, an 88-year-old general convention representative from Kathmandu constituency number five.
Publicity committee coordinator Subash Pokharel said general convention representative and legal expert Narayan Prasad Bhattarai will present the working procedures of the SGC. Nepali Congress Kaski President Koshor Datta Baral will conduct the closed session.
General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma are presenting separate proposals in the session. The proposals include a political review, party statute, possible amendments, and organizational reform.
According to Pokharel, nine different groups will discuss the proposals and present their conclusions.
On the first day, leaders, including the general secretaries, referred to the changing national context and the growing demand—especially from younger generations—for reform within the party.
A total of 2,662 general convention representatives registered in support of the SGC on Sunday alone.
