80 days to HoR polls: EC tightens rules to ensure transparency in election spending

Kathmandu, Dec 15: With 80 days left until the House of Representatives (HoR) election slated for March 5, 2026, the Election Commission (EC) has introduced new provisions in the Election Code of Conduct–2082 to enhance transparency in campaign financing.

Under the revised code, all election-related income and expenditures must be carried out through the banking system. Candidates and political parties are also required to preserve bills and vouchers for all expenses incurred during the campaign period.

According to the EC, the new measures are intended to make the sources and use of election funds transparent and accountable.

In addition, political parties and candidates will have to disclose the estimated cost of their election campaigns and the sources of funding at the time of filing nominations.

The code further mandates candidates to open a separate bank account exclusively for election purposes and conduct all campaign-related financial transactions through that account. The EC believes these provisions will help curb irregularities and promote fair electoral practices.
