International Volunteer Day and World Soil Day Marked Today
Kathmandu, Dec 5 — Today marks the celebration of International Volunteer Day, which coincides with World Soil Day. Both observances are celebrated annually by most UN member states at the call of the United Nations.
This year’s International Volunteer Day (IVD) carries the theme “Every Contribution Matters,” adding special significance as it signals the global launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026). The initiative stems from a UN General Assembly resolution urging a worldwide effort to recognise and strengthen the essential role of volunteers in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Volunteers play a vital role in nurturing a culture of service, connecting generations, and supporting long-term development efforts. Their contributions help build stronger, more resilient communities and advance shared progress toward global goals.
The UN previously declared 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers in 1997, aiming to highlight volunteerism as a key force in addressing social, economic, cultural, humanitarian, and peace-related challenges. International Volunteer Day has been formally observed since 1985, when the General Assembly designated December 5th as a global day to honor volunteer contributions and encourage national-level awareness campaigns.
Marking the occasion, the United Nations noted that member states are expected to reaffirm their commitment to integrating volunteers into development strategies, with events also scheduled at the UN General Assembly Hall in New York.
In his message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed appreciation for volunteers worldwide, praising their courage, dedication, and compassion—especially as they support communities affected by disasters, conflicts, and poverty. UN volunteers currently serve in 169 countries, promoting peace, justice, and equality.
Meanwhile, World Soil Day is also observed today to highlight the importance of healthy soil and advocate for its sustainable management. Global events, discussions, and campaigns focus on soil protection, sustainable farming practices, and actions to combat the effects of climate change.
