Government to terminate contract agreements of sick projects

Kathmandu: The government is preparing to terminate the contract agreements of 234 roads and bridges that have remained in limbo for years.

The contract agreements of the sick projects that were supposed to be developed by the Road Division Office, Postal Highway and Mid Hill Highway of the Federal Road Supervision and Monitoring Office under the Department of Roads are being revoked.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation; Physical Infrastructure and Transport; and Urban Development Kulman Ghising held discussions with the officials and stakeholders regarding this issue on Saturday. It is said that the 38 projects under the Federal Road Supervision and Monitoring Office in Damak are in chronic status, while 75 from Kathmandu, 39 from Pokhara, 49 from Surkhet, 16 of the Postal Highway and 17 projects of the Mid Hill Highway also face the same fate.

The then and incumbent responsible officials would be probed by forming a committee for their alleged involvement in making the projects sick due to their failure to get things done from the projects.

During the discussions, Minister Ghising said that there was no option but to terminate the contract agreements of the sick industries.

Government secretaries, joint secretaries, Director General of Department of Roads, project chiefs and other responsible officials were present at the meeting. On the occasion, Minister Ghising also directed the officials to immediately book the wrongdoers for their involvement in irregularities, dillydallying, bribery and other misconducts.
