Cholera cases rise again in Birgunj, public concern grows
Birgunj: Cholera infections in Birgunj, previously thought to be under control, have started rising again in recent days, causing concern among residents.
The outbreak, which began in Birgunj and surrounding areas one month ago, had been under control from the first week of September. However, continuous rainfall in recent days has contributed to a resurgence of cases.
According to data released by Birgunj Metropolitan City on Sunday, the number of infected individuals in the metropolis has reached 224. An additional 18 patients were admitted to Pokhariya Hospital, bringing the district’s total cases to 242.
Dr. Uday Narayan Singh, spokesperson for Narayani Hospital, reported that 20–22 cholera patients have been admitted daily over the past three to four days. He attributed the renewed outbreak to contaminated water.
Out of 1,461 diarrhea patients admitted to hospitals in Birgunj and Pokhariya so far, 1,431 have recovered and returned home, while 30 remain under treatment.
Jaymod Thakur, spokesperson for the District Health Office, urged residents to drink only boiled water, emphasizing that strict precautions are essential to control the infection.
