Nepali women’s struggles key to current rights achievements: Minister Dr.Rana

August 20, Kathmandu: Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba stated that the current achievements in women’s rights and empowerment in Nepal are the result of Nepali women’s own struggles.

Speaking at the inauguration of a seminar organised by the Nepal Women’s Association on the theme “Role of Nepal Women’s Association in the Past, Present, and Future,” she highlighted that significant constitutional rights for women have been secured through their persistent efforts.

Minister Dr. Rana recalled the contributions of women leaders like Mangaladevi Singh and Shailaja Acharya, emphasising that their long struggles and sacrifices paved the way for these achievements. However, she noted that the current progress is not enough, and women must continue their fight.

She acknowledged women’s active participation in all movements, from the 2007 BS revolution to the establishment of the republic. The current constitution ensures at least 33% women’s representation in federal and provincial parliaments and 40% in local bodies, which Dr. Rana called a positive step. Y

et, she stressed the need for continued struggle to make these legal provisions meaningful. Reflecting on her own experiences, she noted that patriarchal mindsets still dominate society, making politics challenging for women.

She urged women to unite, empower themselves, and fight for their rights, adding that women worldwide face similar challenges in politics.
