Government committed to establishing perfect democracy: PM Oli

Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the government is committed to establishing a perfect democracy by fully implementing all fundamental rights, including the right to information.

Speaking at the 19th National Information Day organized by the National Information Commission, Prime Minister Oli questioned the practice of seeking information that, by law, must remain confidential or is unrelated to public concern.

“We achieved democracy through a long and difficult struggle. I have personally fought for rights such as freedom of expression and the right to information. These rights have been deliberately enshrined in the constitution, and this government is committed to ensuring their implementation. We all envision a free, open, and disciplined society. A perfect democracy is our goal, and the right to information is an essential part of it,” the Prime Minister said.

He further noted, “Some individuals professionally demand information on issues that are irrelevant or fall under personal privacy or ongoing investigations. Not everything in society or the state can or should be made public. When we take an oath of office, we pledge not to disclose sensitive information unnecessarily. Therefore, it is important to uphold our dignity and discipline while implementing fundamental rights.”

Dismissing any perception of conflict between the government and the National Information Commission, the Prime Minister said there is a need to address challenges in the implementation of fundamental rights. He also emphasized the importance of regulating social media and promoting a well-organized society.

The event also honored right to information advocates, outstanding information officers, journalists, and other contributors for their efforts in promoting transparency and access to information.
