Chaurikharka in Rukum East emerging as a new tourist destination in western Nepal
July 24, Kathmandu: Chaurikharka, located in Bhume Rural Municipality of Rukum East, is rapidly gaining popularity as a new tourist hotspot. While only a handful of domestic tourists visited the area in previous years, this year has seen thousands flocking to enjoy its scenic beauty.
The number of visitors to Chaurikharka is steadily increasing, with an estimated 500 to 1,000 domestic and international tourists arriving daily. Situated at an elevation of approximately 4,000 meters above sea level, Chaurikharka captivates visitors with its breathtaking natural landscapes and vibrant alpine meadows adorned with colourful wildflowers.
The accessibility of the destination has improved due to a well-maintained trail from the Mid-Hill Highway, making it easier for tourists to reach. According to Mohabir Khadka, a businessman from Rukum West’s Khalanga who visited the site, it takes about a three-hour trek from the Mid-Hill Highway to reach Chaurikharka.
The destination is ideal for year-round visits, but the monsoon season adds a special charm with blooming wildflowers, bustling herder activity, and grazing sheep and goats, bringing the landscape to life. Chaurikharka has become a favourite for those seeking a short, scenic trek from the Mid-Hill Highway, offering an immersive experience in nature’s beauty.
Tourists, especially on weekends and holidays, enjoy camping overnight, indulging in local food, and celebrating with singing and dancing. Bhume Rural Municipality is actively working on the development and promotion of Chaurikharka. Hom Bahadur Shrestha, the chairperson of the rural municipality, stated that efforts are underway to improve the trail and develop other tourism infrastructure.
Plans are also in place to enhance cleanliness and other facilities in the coming days. Visitors to Chaurikharka can also enjoy stunning views of the Himalayas, towering hills, lush alpine pastures, and the nearby Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
