India-Nepal ties expanding, says MEA official
July 4, Kathamdu: The Additional Secretary of the Northern Division at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Munu Mahawar, told journalists from Nepal and Bhutan on Thursday that India-Nepal relations are growing stronger.
Highlighting robust people-to-people ties, he noted over 40 bilateral mechanisms addressing issues like border management, urging regular meetings to resolve challenges. On the delayed Eminent Persons’ Group Report reviewing treaties like the 1950 Friendship Treaty, Mahawar said it would be addressed at the right time.
He emphasised frequent high-level exchanges, with 17 visits since May 2014, and India’s increased support in connectivity, including Nepal’s first broad-gauge rail line (Jayanagar–Bijalpura–Bardibas), Integrated Check Posts, and hydropower projects like the 480 MW Phukot Karnali. India has completed its portion of the Hulaki Highway.
Digital connectivity has advanced with Nepal adopting UPI payments via FonePay QR since March 2024. India’s aid also spans culture, education, and health, with 45% of MEA’s development budget allocated to Nepal and Bhutan.
Separately, journalists discussed trade and investment opportunities with FICCI officials, focusing on private-sector collaboration.
